In its first year of operation, Boston’s Cole Law Partners has built a formidable practice focused on commercial, construction and employment litigation, as well as risk management services for both businesses and individuals.
Within its first few months of operation, the firm argued before the Supreme Judicial Court in a landmark Prompt Payment Act case — a significant early achievement that represented a total firm effort. During that same period, the firm grew from four to nine attorneys, establishing itself as a destination for experienced litigators.
Cole Law Partners structures its operations around transparent compensation, lower billable-hour requirements, and guaranteed payments above target thresholds, supplemented by discretionary bonuses. Metrics are communicated directly to attorneys on the basis of defined expectations. The firm operates with remote and hybrid flexibility and incorporates two-way feedback across all levels, including attorney input on both case strategy and firm operations.
Founding Partner J. Nathan Cole holds leadership roles across several professional organizations. He serves as secretary of the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association and chairs its Construction Law Committee. He also chairs the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Real Estate Development and Construction Practice Group. Additionally, he serves as Northeast regional chair of the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Membership Committee and is past chair of the IADC Construction Law Committee. Attorneys across the firm maintain active involvement with the Massachusetts Bar Association and MassDLA, and regularly present to bar and trade associations throughout the region.
The firm’s growth strategy centers on hiring attorneys whose professional integrity Cole has observed firsthand, many of whom he has worked with previously. Rapid expansion in the firm’s first five months has been managed through deliberate hiring and the establishment of internal structures designed to sustain growth while maintaining attorney engagement and organizational cohesion.
